Dr. Janet A. Harkness

Janet A. Harkness is Director of the Survey Research and Methodology Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), Director of the UNL Gallup Research Center, and Professor of English at UNL. Before being appointed to the Donald and Shirley Clifton Chair in Survey Science at UNL, she was Director of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) for Germany and Senior Scientist at ZUMA. She now continues her affiliation with ZUMA as a Senior Research Scientist. She is a member of the Central Co-ordinating Team of the European Social Survey (ESS) with responsibility for the ESS Translation Guidelines. She gained her Masters in Comparative Medieval Studies from Edinburgh University, Scotland and was awarded a doctorate in English Literature and Linguistics, Cultural Anthropology and Phonetics from Albert-Ludwigs University, Freiburg. Her current research focuses on the interface between instrument design and version comparability. She has published, presented, and taught on numerous aspects of cross-cultural survey research and communication. She became a Descartes Laureate in 2005.
